Florence (or Firenze, Florentia and Fiorenza) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany, and of the province of Florence. It is the most populated city in Tuscany with more than 950,000 people living in it.

Florence is often considered to be the birth place of the Italian Renaissance, due to its history and importance in the Middle Ages. In particular, it's best known for its Art and Architecture, and has even been called the "Athens of the Middle Ages."

The historic center of Florence was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1982, due to the importance of its cultural heritage.

The best-known landmark and architectural jewel of Florence is the domed city cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, known as The Duomo. 600 years after the building of the Duomo, it is still the largest brick and mortar dome in the world.

Another famous landmark of Florence is the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge). The most unusual feature of this bridge is the large number of shops built upon its edges, which are held up by stilts. The bridge also contains Vasari's corridor, which links the Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti (the Medici residence). This bridge is the only one in Florence to have survived WW2 intact.
